VABA-DC Inaugural Reception - March 27, 2009 On March 27, 2008, VABA-DC officially introduced itself to the community. Approximately 45 Vietnamese American attorneys, students, bar association presidents and community leaders gathered at WilmerHale for the Inaugural Reception of the Vietnamese American Bar Association of the Greater Washington DC Area (VABA-DC).
As the only Vietnamese American bar association on the East Coast, VABA was formed to promote the professional growth and advancement of Vietnamese American attorneys, encourage and facilitate the entry of Vietnamese American students into the legal profession, and contribute to the public interest by serving as a voice for the local Vietnamese American community and assisting community members with legal concerns.
The founding Board members are: Tuyet Duong, Andy Le, Uyen Le, Caroline Nguyen, Catherine Nguyen, Danny Nguyen, Martha (Mai) Nguyen, Phong Nguyen, and Hansel Pham.
The Executive Officers for the 2008-2009 term are: Caroline Nguyen (President), Andy Le (Treasurer), and Uyen Le (Secretary).
*** “Representing Survivors of Trafficking and Domestic Violence” CLE Course - VABA-DC partnered with Boat People SOS Inc. (BPSOS) to provide a CLE course teaching attorneys how to help survivors of trafficking and domestic violence navigate the immigration laws and processes.
Founding Board Member Tuyet G. Duong co-taught the course to an audience of APA and Vietnamese-speaking attorneys, who - among other things - learnt how to file VAWA self-petitions and T-visas. *** 2nd Annual Summer Meet and Greet Event for Attorneys and Summer Clerks - Thursday, July 17, 2008
